I think that the rings mean the colour of the mascots uniforms.
I got it wrong, I since found this; The five olympic rings represent the five continents and were designed in 1913.
Great work Aimee you are right they do represent the 5 continents.
I FOUND THIS ON THE INTERNET:
The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.
